1. Stick to Your Budget

Your budget sets the tone for your entire wedding planning journey, including your choice of wedding photographer. Sit down and figure out how much you're comfortable spending on whether it's an elopement wedding photographer, wedding photographer for intimate weddings, or a photographer for a destination wedding. Do some light research first to get an idea of what things cost so you can set a realistic budget based on your vision and finances.

Keep in mind that while capturing those precious moments is important, it's equally crucial to stick within your financial boundaries. This step will help you narrow down your options and focus on wedding photographers who fit your budget without breaking the bank. If wedding photography is a priority for you, there are ways to cut the budget in other areas to accommodate a slightly higher photography budget - I know I'm biased, but why spend so much time and money on the day, then cheap out on the photos? This is what's going to capture all of your hard work, and you will have these for the rest of your life.

Make sure that you aren't solely booking someone based on budget - bottom line, don't go bankrupt, but also make sure you hire someone who you're comfortable with and confident that they will capture the day without you having to stress. This isn't a day that you can redo!

Photographers prices range from $1500-$20,000 depending on their experience.

2. Look Around

Think of finding your wedding photographer as a delightful exploration.

Each wedding photographer brings their unique flair and style to the table. Dive into the depths of their portfolios online. Explore their websites and social media platforms to soak in their vibe!

Peek at weddings they've captured in the past and see if their style aligns with the dreamy aesthetic you have in mind for your wedding.

Think outside the box!

You can also search for a local wedding photographer near you. If you're from Ontario, try these keywords: wedding photographer GTA, wedding photographer Barrie, wedding photographer Ontario, or wedding photographer Muskoka.

You can also book your local wedding photographer and have your wedding at your dream destination just like Kim + Travis Wedding in Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, Tulum, Mexico; and Taylor and Bobby in Relais Villa Monte Solare, Perugia, Italy.

Keep your options open and consider photographers outside your area. If your dream photographer doesn't live near you, don't be afraid to reach out to them and inquire about their travel fees.

I know I love to travel for weddings!

3. Check Out Their Work

Take a closer look at their previous work!

It's like flipping through the pages of a beautifully crafted storybook. Pay attention to the consistency in their portfolio – from the soft glow of the lighting to the tender moments they've captured. Be sure to confirm that the gallery that you get will be similar to the work that you see online - you don't want to be shocked by creative freedom and get a gallery that is completely different from what is shown online.

You also want to ensure that your photographer is confident in documenting YOUR wedding... meaning the time of day your ceremony is at (full sun vs soft lighting), the location (indoor vs outdoor, church vs field). Not everyone is comfortable taking photos is different lighting situations. Make sure to ask questions and request examples that align with your wedding.

Ensure they have experience in being a:

1. Wedding Photographer

2. Elopement Photographer

3. Destination Wedding Photographer

If the photographer doesn't have blogged weddings, request to see full wedding albums or galleries to get a comprehensive understanding of their storytelling abilities and how they capture the flow of a wedding day.

Remember that you can ask photographers to show you more Client Galleries. It's helpful to have a meeting in person too. This way they can bring more of their work and you can make sure that you connect.

4. Read Reviews

Reviews and testimonials are like little love notes from those who've experienced the photographer's magic firsthand.

Allot time in reading through these heartfelt accounts on the photographer's website or reputable wedding directories.

And don't hesitate to reach out to your inner circle for personal recommendations – after all, there's nothing like trusted advice from those you hold dear.

5. Talk It Out

Time to pop the champagne and schedule those consultations!

Meeting with potential photographers is like having a cozy chat with old friends. This is your chance to share your vision for your big day and see if there's a spark of connection. Prepare your questionnaire for your wedding photographer and ask for a quotation.

Pay attention to how the photographer communicates – it's important that you feel comfortable and understood. Watch out for any wedding photographer red flags. After all, they'll be there to capture the intimate moments that will become cherished memories.

Beware of Scam! be sure that you hire a reputable photographer

6. Ask About the Details

Before you sign on the dotted line, let's take a stroll through the fine print.

Reviewing contracts and packages is like ensuring every detail of your wedding day is meticulously planned. Dive into the specifics of what each package includes – from the hours of coverage to the number of beautifully edited photos you'll receive. Also, have those conversations about the investment and when payments are due (some scams make you pay ahead and then deliver nothing) - I request that final payment is made by the day of the wedding, however, the conversations I have with couples and my reputation speaks for itself.

Keep an eye out for any hidden surprises in the terms and conditions, and make sure everything aligns with your vision.

7. Think About Extras

Time to sprinkle a bit of extra magic onto your wedding day!

Think about those special add-ons that could enhance your experience. Whether it's a dreamy engagement shoot or stunning photo albums to treasure forever, these extras can add an extra layer of joy to your journey.

Discuss your ideas with the photographers and see how they can weave them into your story.
